CHRZANOW![]() ![]()
Origin/meaning: Chrzanow was founded as a town in the 14th century. It is situated c. 35 kms west of Cracow (Krakow) in southern Poland (Galicia or Little Poland). The arms with Saint Nicholas had been used by the town of Chrzanow since the Middle Ages. A new arms of the town appeared in the 19th century. The new arms is a vertically divided crest with arms of Saxony to the left and arms of Poland to the right. The whole is under a royal crown. Actually this new arms is exactly the same as those of the Duchy of Warsaw (1807-15) to which Chrzanow belonged from 1809 to 1815. Both of these arms were used at the same time for many decades. In the 1960s the St Nicholas arms were in use, then in the 1970s the other arms reappeared and both are still used. Literature : Image obtained from Laszlo Szirtes, Hungary.
