BARTOSZYCE

Origin/meaning:
Black and white colours of the town's arms are directly linked to heraldic symbols of mediaeval Bartoszyce. Old Polish 'Barta' and Old German 'Barte' mean an axe with wide blade, making the arms canting. The town's history dates 1326 when city rights were granted. In those days it was called Rosenthal- the Valley of Roses. In 1332 the town was renamed as Bartenstein.
