HUÁNUCO
Origin/meaning :
The arms were granted by the Spanish governor Cristobal Vaca de Castro in
1543. The first version of these arms only showed a crowned lion,
symbolising the name of the capital city "Leon de Huanuco de los Caballeros del
Peru" (Lion of Huanuco of the peruvian cavaliers). After the capture of the
captain Francisco Hernandez Giron (a Spanish captain who started an
insurrection against Spanish authorities) the people of Huanuco asked for a new
coat of arms. The new coat of arms shows in the first quarter the Huanuco
lion plunging his claws into the captain Hernandez Gironns chest and a
chain on the captains neck. The second quarter shows the "pillqo"
bird, a typical bird of Huanuco with its red crest. This bird appeared in
the shield of the Incan Prince Achapuri Inkil Tupaq, because his wife name was princess "Pilqowaqo". The name of the main valley in Huanuco is "pilqo" as well.
