AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN EMPIRE
The former Austro-Hungarian Empire was spread over a large part of Central Europe, comprising the present countries of Austria, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slowakia, Slovenia, Bosnia, Croatia as well as parts of present Poland, Romania, Italy, Ukraine, Moldova and Yugoslavia. The arms above were adopted in the early 20th century and were used only until 1918, when the Empire was abolished. It was the first attempt to make arms for the whole Empire. Previsously the arms of Austria and Hungary were used separately, with the Emperor having his own arms. The arms above show as the main shields the arms of Austria (left) and Hungary (right), with the Imperial arms as a small shield in between. The Eagle supporter is taken from the Austrian arms, the angel from the Hungarian arms. In this section only the arms of the territories claimed by the Emperor (part of the title of the Emperors) as well as the arms of the provinces of the Kingdom of Hungary are shown, as these are now often part of more than one country. Parts that do correspond with present territories are dealt with in the respective modern countries (such as the present Austrian States) or are dealt with both in this section and in the appropriate country section. All arms of cities and municipalities can be found under the present countries.
The historical arms of Austria Arms of the 43 territories and claims used by the Emperor in his official title. Arms of the 71 provinces in the Hungarian part of the empire |
