DEUTSCHLANDSBERG
State : Steiermark
Origin/meaning:
The situation concerning Deutschlandsberg is a bit complicated. Styrian historians maintain that there is no grant of arms on record and that the arms are traditional. But Deutschlandsberg was part of the Erzbistum Salzburg, "hochfürstlich-salzburgischer Markt", until 1803. And in her work "Salzburger Gemeindewappen", Zaisberger / Pfeiffer maintain that Deutschlandsberg was granted arms June 29, 1445, but possibly even before 1278?
This may even have happened but there is no formal grant now on record, only a diploma by the Emperor Ferdinand II, dated May 8, 1627, which confirms the grant of a seal by King Rudolph of 1278 (State Archives of Styia).
The meaning of the arms is not clear, maybe the tower simply symbolises the city character in the woods.
