SKUODAS

Origin/meaning:
Skuodas received city rights on May 17 1572 from Joannes Chodkiewics, who at the time ruled the city, and was renames Johanesberg after himself. The old name was still used, however. The use of the head of St. John Baptist on a platter probably dates from 1572, but was first mentioned in 1645. St. John is the patron saint of the city as well as from Joannes Chodkiewics.
On the 18th century seal of the city the head appeared in a city gate, making the composition canting, as Berg could also have the meaning of fortress. These arms were used until the 19th century.

The seal used from 1718-1784.

In 1970 Skuodas received new arms, showing a gate with three crowns, probably a mis-interpretation of the old seal. The head of the saint was omitted. These arms were abolished already after a few months.

The arms from 1970.

The historical arms were finally restored and granted on May 6, 1992.
