PRIENAI
Origin/meaning:
The arms were granted on November 9, 1791, at the same time as the city rights. The arms show St. George, killing the dragon. He was the patron saint of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the 18th century. As a symbol of struggle against evil, he was also the symbol of the struggle against Prussia at the time, and thus a political symbol. In 1795 Prienai became Prussian until 1807. From 1807-1815 to the (French) Duchy of Warsaw and from 1815-1918 to the Russian Empire.
The arms were used until 1807 and restored on April 1, 1996.
