PANEVEZYS
Origin/meaning:
The arms were granted on May 11, 1993 and are based on several seals dating from the 18th and early 19th century. These seals showed a divided shield with in the upper part the Russian Imperial eagle, and in the lower a castle. The meaning of the castle is not known, but it is very likely that it symbolises the old important city itself. The city used in the 19th and early 20th century the arms of the Panevezy district as its arms. To distinguish the arms of the city and the district, the castle was taken as a symbol. As the historical colours were not known, the colours were chosen arbitrarily.
