KUDIRKOS NAUMIESTIS
Origin/meaning:
The arms were granted on June 30, 1993.
The town was founded in the 16th century as Naumiestis (new town). In 1640 it was named Vladislavov in honour of the ruler Vladislaus Vasa. In 1934 the present name was adopted.
In the middle of the 17th century the city rights were granted by Queen Cecilila Renata, and at the same time a seal was granted. The seal showed 'a head of a deer with antlers, and three stars'. The origin or meaning of the symbol is not quite clear, but according to legend, the King was nearly killed while hunting near the town. In any case, the royal family used to hunt in the area frequently. The old arms were used until the end of the 18th century and finally restored in 1993.
 The old arms.
