VALDEMARPILS
Origin/meaning :
Valdemarpils, called then Sasmaka, is first time mentioned in 1582 as a fishers' village at the Sasmaka lake.
In 1917 town rights were granted.
The arms were granted in 1925. The fisher's ship symbolizes the origin of settlement, and cones symbolize large woods on environs.
In 1926 the name of town was changed to Valdemarpils. Krišjanis Valdemars (1825-1891) was a leader of the "jaunlatvieši" movement ("Young Latvians"; parallel to Young Czechs or Young Germans) of national renascence. He learned in the school of Sasmaka.
