RUJIENA
Origin/meaning :
In 13th century Germans built a Rujen castle at Ruja river, where important trade ways have crossed. The town at castle is first time mentioned in 1461.
But the Livonian war (1558-1583) destroyed the town, and it lasted only a center of manor for a long time.
In 1896 the narrow-gauge railway Valka-Pernava was built, and it initiated the development of the town.
City rights were granted in 1920.
The arms were granted in 1925: three flax blossoms and a flax sheaf, because Rujiena is famous by the linen cultivation.
