REZEKNE

Origin/meaning :
Rezekne is a heart of the Latgale region.
In 1285 Germans built a castle Rositten here, replacing the old settlement of Latgali (Lettigallians, Latvian tribe).
The town is mentioned in 16th century.
In 1773 the Russian Empress Catherine II granted city rights and arms to Rezekne, called then Rezhitsa in Russian. The arms were taken from Polotsk (city in present Belarus) and were similar to the Ludza arms, only the backgrounds were different.

After the independence of Latvia the new arms were granted in 1925: a griffin, according to the Latgale region arms, with small shield in colors of the National Flag.
