Priekule is first time mentioned in 1483 as a fortified manor, called Preekuln in German. The town started to grow since 1871, when a railway St. Petersburg - Warsaw was built. The Government of Latvia granted town rights to Priekule in 1928.
The arms were granted in 1938. It shows a part of former manor fortifications, called Zviedru varti (Swedish gate), built in 1688.
