ROMA

Origin/meaning:
Roma (Rome) is one of history's most important towns, traditionally founded in 753 BC. It is the seat of the catholic pope and since 1870 capital of Italy. The letters in the arms date back to pre-christian times, during the Roman Republic, and stand for Senatus PopulusQue Romanum, or Senate and People of Rome. The cross was added as the main Christian symbol.

During the fascist regime in the early part of the 20th century a chief with the fasces was added :

Later the arms were changed and the letters disappeared. Instead the arms showed the wolf nursing Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, around 753 BC.
