Stemmi di comuni e province d'Italia
Italian Civic Heraldry

LAVELLO

Origin/meaning:
The arms are based on a legend of the local history. In 1436 there was the last siege of the town during the wars of succession between Renato d'Angiò and Alfonso d'Aragona. Lavello's inhabitants sided with the Prince of Taranto, one of the main supporters of the Aragona's house. Near the little church of St. Juan there was a tower that was set on fire during this siege. The legend recounts of a group of brave Levallan soldiers that resisted at the siege inside the tower and the only way, for the enemies, to defeat them was to set the tower on fire. The "torre diruta et infocata" later became the symbol of the town.
