Italian Civic Heraldry

CHERASCO

Origin/meaning:
Unfortunately I have no information on the meaning or background of the shield itself.
Any information is welcome !
The two figures in the coat of arms represent each of the rivers, Tanaro(the male figure) and Stura ( the female figure) which embrace the valley below the bastion where the city is situated. Cherasco was founded in the mid 13th Century by the Marquises of Salmour and other local medieval nobles who wished to invest in a real estate venture. The oldest church is an ancient gothic church with a magnificent baroque interior. Its facade is emblazoned with ceramics brought back to Cherasco by Crusaders from the Holy Land.

Literature : Anonymous : 500 Stemmi di comuni Italiani. Milano, 1940; background send to me by mail.
