WIGTOWN (County Council and District Council)
County incorporated into : 1975 Dumfries & Galloway Region
Origin/meaning : The arms show the silver lion of Galloway crowned by an antique golden crown. The lion represents the two important families; the Douglas of Galloway and the Macdouall (crown). The silver chevron is taken from the arms of Fleming, Earl of Wigtown. The sun is taken from the seal of the Burgh of Wigtown. The chief shows a golden saltire, derived from the arms of Dalrymple, Earl of Stari. The saltire and the chevron also were part of the Agnews family of Lochnaw. The ermine bar recalls that all parts of the arms are derived from the arms of a Peerage House. ![]() Literature : Patton, 1977; Urquhart, 1979. |
