Origin/meaning : These arms are the same as the old arms of Rutherglen Burgh but without the crest, supporters and compartment of the old one. They date from a time when Rutherglen was a shipbuilding town but the river was too shallow at that location for larger ships and shipbuilding moved down river to Glasgow.
