RENFREW (County Council, District Council and Area Council)

Incorporated into : 1975 Strathclyde Region
District founded in 1975 and incorporated into Area Council in 1996.
Additions to the District : 1975 Barrhead, Johnstone, Paisley, Renfrew

Origin/meaning :
The arms were granted without crown to the County in 1889, with a thistle crown to the District on September 30, 1976 and the above arms on April 16, 1996.

The galley is taken from the arms of the burgh of Renfrew and the arms of the historical West Scotland region. The small shield is the arms of the Clan and Royal House of Stewart, who originated from this region.
