MOTHERWELL (District Council)
Additions : 1975 Motherwell & Wishaw (1920 Motherwell, Wishaw)
Incorporated into : 1996 North Lanarkshire
I have no larger image, any better image is welcome !
Origin/meaning :
The arms were granted on September 30, 1976.
The arms are nearly identical to the arms of the Burgh of Motherwell & Wishaw. The upper half shows two cinquefoils for the Hamilton family as well as for Lanarkshire. The black field symbolises coal mining, whereas the (heraldic) fountain symbolises the Lady's Well in Motherwell. The motto comes from the old arms of Wishaw.
Literature : Urquhart, 1979
