Civic Heraldry of the United Kingdom Scotland LOTHIAN (Regional Council) Incorporated into : 1996 East Lothian, Midlothian and West Lothian Area Councils, Edinburgh city Additions : 1975 East Lothian, Midlothian and West Lothian County Councils, Edinburgh city I have no colour image of these arms. Any better image is welcome ! Origin/meaning : The arms are granted on May 7, 1976. The arms shows a St. Andrew's cross for Scotland within a bordure and a red esutcheon. The sun on the escutcheon is the ancient symbol of the Earldom of Lothian. The supporters are the unicorn common to all Regional Councils, and a green lion, taken from the arms of Midlothian County Council. The Lothian Region was divided into four districts : East Lothian, Midlothian, West Lothian, Edinburgh city Literature : Urquhart, 1979
