Origin/meaning : The arms are based on the historical seal of the royal burgh of Roxburgh, known since the 13th century. The seal showed a rose tree with the royal arms and two birds. The birds in the arms were changed to an eagle (for St. John) and a dove (for St. Mary), the patron saints of Kelso Abbey. Literature : Urquhart, 2001. |
