Origin/meaning :
The arms were granted on August 12, 1975.
The arms ahow the arms of Hamilton, but with the addition of the embattled bridge. The three cinquefoils are taken from the arms of the Dukes of Hamilton and were also used by the Lanarkshire council. The bridge symbolises Bothwell bridge, the oldest bridge in Lanarkshire, dating from 1486.
The motto "Virtue and Vigilance" is a combination of the mottoes of Hamilton Burgh and Lanarkshire.
