GORDON (District Council)
Additions : 1975 Ellon, Huntly, Inverurie, Kintore, Old Meldrum and the districts of Aberdeen (partly), Old Machar, Stoneywood.
Incorporated into : 1996 Grampian (Area Council)
Origin/meaning :
The arms were granted on June 9, 1986.
The arms are quite complicated and are based on the arms of the Clan Gordon, after whom the district is named; as well of the symbols of the five former boroughs in the district. The first quarter shows the boar's heads taken from the arms of the Clan Gordon. They alspo appeared in the arms of Huntly. The second quarter shows an oak tree for Kintore. The otter in the third quarter is taken from Meldrum, the boar's head from the Urquhart family arms and two crescents for the Seton family. The embattled wavy bar is taken from the arms of Old Meldrum. The fourth quarter shows the garbs for the historical Buchan region and the inverse gold hermine (officially designated as pean) from the arms of Ellon. The tower in the centre is taken from the arms of Inverurie.
