DUNFERMLINE (District Council)

Additions : 1975 Burghs of Cowdenbeath, Culross, Dunfermline, Inverkeithing, Lochgelly; Districts of Dunfermline, Lochkelly
Incorporated into : 1996 Fife Area Council.

Origin/meaning :
The arms were granted on February 16, 1976.
The arms were originally granted to the Dunfermline Burgh in 1909. These, in turn, are based on a 16th century seal of the Burgh. The tower is Malcolm's tower, a fortress of King Malcolm III (1057-1093), some remains still exist. The red windows and portcullis denote its Royal ownership. The lions are also considered royal lions.
The motto "Esto Rupes Inaccessa" means "May the rock be inaccessible".
