BUTE (County Council)Incorporated into : 1975 Strathclyde
Origin/meaning : The arms show in the first quarter the three cinquefoils of the Clan Hamilton. James, 2nd Lord Hamilton was made Earl of Arran in 1503, Arran being part of the county. The ship is taken from the arms of the 12th century local leader Somerled, he himself did not have arms, but he used a ship to indicate his power over the seas. His descendants started to use the ship as part of their arms. The family had a stronghold on the Isle of Bute. The chequered bar is taken from the arms of the Clan Stewart, as the second Earl of Annan was from this family. Literature : Patton, 1977 |
