BANFF & BUCHAN (District Council)
Additions : 1975 Skye, South-West Ross & Cromarty
Incorporated into : 1996 Grampian (Area Council)
I have no colour image of these arms. Any bette rimage is welcome !
Origin/meaning :
The arms were granted on October 1, 1975.
The arms show in the base the lion of the Ogilvy clan, with a crown taken from the arms of the clan Gordon, these two clans were the most important in the history of the rebion. This lion already appeared partly in the arms of the older Banff County Council. The chief represents Buchan and the blue colour and wavy division line symbolise the sea. The garbs are taken from the arms of the old Earldom of Buchan, the fish symbolise the fishing industry, especially in Fraserburgh and Peterhead.
Literature : Urquhart, 1979
