OADBY AND WIGSTON

Origin/meaning :
The shield combines the red lion's leg (which represents the Oadby Brabazon and Powys-Keck families) with the two ermine cinquefoils from the Leicestershire County arms; the two pairs of narrow horizontal stripes in gold that symbolise the former railway industry of Wigston and the two white triangles that recall the town's former name of "Wigston Two Steeples".

The crest depicts an owl, the bird of wisdom, emphasises the motto which is "Obtain Wisdom", behind a pelt (indicating the footwear industry) and a shuttle which represents the hosiery industry.

The right supporter is Oadby's lamb which refers to the woollen and hosiery manufacturers and the links with the frame-work knitters company. The other is the tiger which recalls Wigston's associations with the Royal Leicestershire Regiment which is now incorporated into the Royal Anglian Regiment.

Literature : Information provided by the Oadby-Wigston Council.
