LAMBETH

Borough of London
Additions : 1965 Clapham, Streatham

Origin/meaning :
The old (left) arms were granted on April 22, 1922.
The cross is the St. Georges cross of London. The blue and gold chequers are derived from the Warenne family, see also Surrey. The border is derived from the arms of Cornwall, part of the borough belongs to the Duchy of Cornwall. The ecclesial emblems signify that the archbishops of Canterbury have a residence in Lambeth since the thirteenth century. The lamb is both a religious as a canting symbol. The wavy bar stands for the Thames.

The parishes of Clapham and Streatham were added to Lambeth from the neighbouring Borough of Wandsworth in 1965. On March 15, 1966 the arms of Lambeth were altered by the addition of two gold stars to represent these parishes.
