DURHAM (City)

Origin/meaning :
The were recorded at the visitation of 1615.

The white cross on a black shield stands for St. Augustine, founder of the Church of England. The red cross is sometimes said to be for St. Oswald, first Christian King of Northumbria.

It has also been stated that the black and silver stands for the black cloak and white cassock of the Benedictine monks, who founded Durham in the 10th century. The red cross was added as the cross of England.
