Civic Heraldry of the United Kingdom England CHATHAM Incorporated into : 1974 Rochester-upon-Medway (1998 Medway) Origin/meaning : The arms were granted in 1891. The red and gold checky fess is derived from the arms of the Pitt, family Earls of Chatham, two of whom provided Prime Ministers of Great Britain.
