 Origin/meaning:
Wittingen was already mentioned as a city in the 14th century and the city became a possession of the Dukes of Braunschweig-Lüneburg. The oldest known seal dates from 1369 and shows already a gate with the lion of the dukes. Later seals show either only a lion, or a building with the lion, the size and shape of the building has changed considerably during the centuries. The above design dates from the 19th century.
