Deutsche Wappen (Gemeindewappen/Kreiswappen) German Civic Heraldry WITTENBERG (LUTHERSTADT WITTENBERG) State : Sachsen-Anhalt District (Kreis) : Wittenberg Additions :1938 Labetz, Teuchel; 1945 Kleinwittenberg, 1950 Piesteritz, Trajuhn,Wiesigk; 1974 Apollensdorf, 1993 Pratau (1929 Wachsdorf), Reinsdorf (1937 Dobien; 1950 Braunsdorf), 1993 Seegrehna; 2005 Nudersdorf , Schmilkendorf; 2008 Griebo Origin/meaning: Wittenberg developed around a castle built in 1180 and received city rights in 1293. It was one of the main cities at the time in Sachsen and the capital of the Duchy of Sachsen-Wittenberg. The arms are based on the oldest seals of the city, known since 1320. The castle is the city itself, the river is the Elbe, on which banks the city is situated. The two shields are the arms of Sachsen (left) and the arms with the symbol of the Marshall of the Empire (two swords). The Dukes of Sachsen held this title (see also the arms of the district WIttenberg).
