WITTENBERG (LUTHERSTADT WITTENBERG)
State : Sachsen-Anhalt
Origin/meaning: The arms are based on the oldest seals of the city, known since 1320. The castle is the city itself, the river is the Elbe, on which banks the city is situated. The two shields are the arms of Sachsen (left) and the arms with the symbol of the Marshall of the Empire (two swords). The Dukes of Sachsen held this title (see also the arms of the district WIttenberg).
Literature : Lexicon Städte uns Wappen der DDR; Wappen der Landkreise and Kreisfreien Städte des Landes Sachsen-Anhalt.
