WESTERLAND (SYLT)

District (Kreis) : Nordfriesland (until 1974 Südtondern)
 Origin/meaning:
Westerland received city rights in 1905 and the arms were granted in 1907. The above arms were granted in 1955 and were only slightly changed as compared to the 1907 arms.
The lighthouse is the symbol of the city, and also a symbol for the importance of shipping for the city. The waves symbolise the North Sea. The small shield shows the old 18th century arms of the island of Sylt, on which the city is situated. The seal showed a divided shield with a blank upper half and a herring in the lower half. The herring, Sild, is a canting symbol for the island.
