WALDKIRCH

State : Baden-Württemberg
District (Kreis) : Emmendingen
Additions : 1975 Buchholz, Kollnau, Siensbach, Suggental

Origin/meaning:
Waldkirch received city rights in 1300 from the Lords of Schwarzenberg. The first seal of the town, dating from around 1300 shows in the upper part a canting picture; a church between linden and oak leaves (Waldkirch = wood church). The lower part showed the six black hills of the arms of the Lords of Schwarzenberg (see also Elzach and the district arms). These arms were used until 1634, when the arms were changed into the arms above left. These arms were re-granted in 1968.

The new arms (above right) were granted on May 5, 1976 after the merger with the other municipalities. The new arms are based on the oldest seal, with colours derived from the oldest known coloured image, dating from 1588.

Literature : Stadler, 1964-1971, 8 volumes; John and Heine, 1989
