  Origin/meaning:
Tengen was created in 1876 from the former municipalities of Tengen-Dorf, Tengen-Stadt and Tengen-Hinterburg. The latter had received city rights in 1291, became a possession of Habsburg in 1301 and in 1488 of the Teutonic Knoights. Only during the Habsburg reign the city had used a seal, showing the arms of the Habsburg family. As no other historical arms or seals were known, the new city adopted in 1902 the unicorn from the Lords of Tengen.
After the merger with the other municipalities a small shield was added on March 15, 1976. The shield shows the arms of the Teutonic Knights, as most of the other municipalities belonged for some time to the Knights.
