  Origin/meaning:
The old arms (left) were granted on January 10, 1956.
The arms are based on the oldest known seal of the city, known from 1530. The arms show St. John Evangelist, the patron saint of the city, holding a shield with a crescent, his symbol. The colours are the colours of the County Arnsberg, to which the city historically belonged.
The new (above right) arms were granted on June 26, 1978.
These arms also show the patron saint, but now as shown in the Arnsberg Roll of Arms, dating from the 16th century. The municipality also used this composition as unofficial arms from the 19th century until 1956, see below.
