SCHRAMBERG

State : Baden-Württemberg
District (Kreis) : Rottweil

Origin/meaning:
Schramberg grew as a village around the local castle. It became a town in 1547 and a city in 1867. The village was first owned by a local Lord, but later it became an Austrian possession. In 1805 it was incorporated into Württemberg. The Austrians had their own vassals ruling the area. The arms of the city are based on the arms of the Counts of Bissingen-Nippenburg, who were vassals in the second half of the 17th century. The first use of the griffin in the arms of the town dates from the 19th century, where the griffin stands on a mountain. From 1926-1938 the mountain disappeared, but the sword was replaced by a wheel as a symbol for the local (watch)industry. The present arms were granted in 1938.
