RÖMHILD

 Origin/meaning:
Römhild received city rights around 1300 from the Counts of Henneberg. The above arms were granted by Emperor Maximilian in 1498. The main shield shows the chequered bar used by the Counts of Henneberg as Vicounts of Würzburg. The small shield with the column on top shows the canting arms of the Italian Colonna family. The Counts of Henneberg claimed to be descendants of this family.
In the early 20th century and still in 1984 the arms were shown as seen below, with the whole composition in the shield.
