Origin/meaning:
The arms were granted on March 29, 1974.
The key is derived form the old arms of the city, see below, whereas the bridge and waves are added as new symbols for the city, which is situated on both sides of the Weser river. The bridge also symbolises the combination of the many old municipalities.

The previous arms, image below, were granted in 1908 and are a combination of the arms of the Prince-Bishops of Minden (keys) and the arms of Bishop Gerhard of Schaumburg (bishop from 1361-1369) who made a fortress out of the town. The new fortress, of Neustadt, had a separate seal of the old town (Altstadt). Both towns used the crossed keys, but the Altstadt used a (unidentified) bird as an additional sign, the Neustadt the arms of Schaumburg (known since 1464). Both towns were merged into one administrative unit in 1734.

Hupp showed the arms in the 1920s in a slightly different composition:

Literature : Stadler, 1964-1971, 8 volumes; Hupp, O: Kaffee Hag albums, 1920s; www.petershagen.de
