Origin/meaning: The previous arms, image below, were granted in 1908 and are a combination of the arms of the Prince-Bishops of Minden (keys) and the arms of Bishop Gerhard of Schaumburg (bishop from 1361-1369) who made a fortress out of the town. The new fortress, of Neustadt, had a separate seal of the old town (Altstadt). Both towns used the crossed keys, but the Altstadt used a (unidentified) bird as an additional sign, the Neustadt the arms of Schaumburg (known since 1464). Both towns were merged into one administrative unit in 1734. ![]()
