PEGNITZ
State : Bayern
District (Kreis) : Bayreuth (until 1973 Pegnitz)
 Origin/meaning:
Until the 15th century the city was a possession of the Kings of Bohemia. The seals of the city thus showed the two-tailed lion of Bohemia. In the 15th century the Margraves of Nürnberg acquired the city. The first seals from the Nürnberg period show a quartered shield with a lion and the arms of Hohenzollern (see the arms of Bayreuth). From the late 15th century the present arms appear. The eagle is the eagle of Brandenburg, the new dynasty of the Margraves of Nürnberg. The fish probably indicates the Pegnitz river. The arms have not basically changed since.
