 Origin/meaning:
Metelen developed around the Convent founded in 889 by King Arnulf. The oldest seal of the village dates from 1631 and showed an orb, with the text Arnulphus Caesar, referring to King Arnulf, and a letter M. The convent also had imperial freedom, which could also be symbolised by the orb. The present arms, which were based on the old seal were granted in 1964. Only the text was removed and the colours were based on the colours of the Steinfurt District.
In 1939 it was proposed to adopt arms based on the old arms of the medieval Lords of Metelen, but the council never adopted these arms (image above).
