The first arms of the city were officially granted on September 7, 1883. The arms showed the local bridge over the Main river, which was built in 1846. On the bridge was shown a crowned L and 1846. The bridge was built on the orders of King Ludwig I. Above the bridge a star was placed, as a symbol of 'luck for the future for the city now that the bridge is built' (according to the grant).
In 1930 the crowned L and the date were removed. These new arms were used, but not formally granted until 1965.
