Deutsche Wappen (Gemeindewappen/Kreiswappen)
German Civic Heraldry

LINDIG

State : Thüringen
District (Kreis) : Saale-Holzland-Kreis

Origin/meaning:
The arms were granted after 1998 and are derived from the old seal of the village. The seal is known since the second half of the 17th century and showed a knight killing a dragon. The knight is St. George, who, according to legend killed a dragon. The name of the village supposedly was derived from this type of dragon, which is called Lindwurm in German. However, according to legend, not St. George, but St. Margaret killed this type of dragon. The arms thus show the wrong saint....

Literature : Ulle, 1998
