LENGERICH

State : Nordrhein-Westfalen
District (Kreis) : Steinfurt (until 1974 Tecklenburg)

Origin/meaning:
The arms are based on the first seal, granted together with the city rights in 1727 by King Friedrich Wilhelm I of Prussia. The seal showed the anchor with a horizontal linden tree branch. The anchor and the linden tree are probably derived from the arms of the Counts of Tecklenburg. These originally used water lily leaves, which were later described as linden leaves. The counts also used an anchor for some time in their arms.

The arms were changed in 1939. The new arms showed a mountain in the base of the shield with the three water lily leaves of Tecklenburg. On the mountain there was a small shield with two blue bars. These are the arms of the Lords of Münster, who lived on the Vortlage castle near Lengerich. These arms were used until 1949, when the present arms were granted.
