 Origin/meaning:
The oldest seal of the city dates from the middle of the 14th century. The seal showed the two towers and the city wall, and in between the small shield of the Kings of Bohemia, to which the city at the time belonged. Ever since the composition remained the same, except that the small shield was replaced by the arms of the new rulers. When in 1473 the Dukes of Bayern acquired the city, the lion of Bohemia was replaced by the diamonds of the Wittelsbach family. In 1505 Lauf became a possession of the city of Nürnberg and ever since the small shield shows the arms of Nürnberg.
