MARBURG
MARBURG-BIEDENKOPF (MR)
State : Hessen
Additions : 1973 Biedenkopf

Origin/meaning:
The arms were granted on June 16, 1930 and confirmed on July 11, 1975.
The arms show the lion of Hessen, as the Counts of Hessen for a long time had their residence in the city. They also founded the first Protestant university in the country. The tomb of the Counts of Hessen is in the local church. Besides the Counts the German Order also had a strong influence in the city from 1234-1809. The castle of the Order was next to the palace of the counts the most impressive building in the whole of Hessen. The arms of the Order are thus held by the lion.
The arms were not changed after the merger with the district Biedenkopf.
