Origin/meaning: The rose in the first quarter is derived from the old County and counts of Altenburg, which existed until the 15th century. It later became a possession of the Wettin family as Sachsen-Altenburg. The arms of the Wettin family is shown in the third quarter. The second quarter shows the arms of the Pleissenland, which now forms part of the district. The fourth quarter shows an acorn, the highest playing card in the Skat game, which originated in the district. Literature : Linder and Olzog, 1996.
