Deutsche Wappen (Gemeindewappen/Kreiswappen) German Civic Heraldry KERPEN State : Nordrhein-Westfalen District (Kreis) : Erftkreis (until 1975 Bergheim) Additions : 1974 Blatzheim, Buir, Horrem (partly), Manheim, Mödrath, Sindorf (partly), Türnich Origin/meaning: The arms were granted in 1938. The two lions are the combined lions of (see Brabant and Limburg, as the town was a possession of the Dukes of Brabant. The oldest seal which is known since 1306, showed the two lions in a quartered shield above a city wall. Later seals show only the patron saint, St.Martin. The tower in the new arms symbolises the Imperial castle built in the 12th century in the town. In the early 20th century the arms below were shown in the Kaffee Hag albums.
