HOHENWART

State : Bayern
District (Kreis) : Neuburg-Schrobenhausen

Origin/meaning:
The arms show St. George, patron saint of the town and the Benedictan Convent of Hohenwart, around which the town developed. The oldest known seal dates from 1349 and already shows St. George, but standing and not shown as a knight. The above arms were officially granted in 1606 by Duke Maximilian I of Bayern.

Although the official seals and images have always shown the above arms, in 1562 Apian mentioned in his roll of arms for Hohenwart a blue castle on a red mountain in a silver field. Most likely he did not know about the old arms and designed canting arms (Hohen-wart, or high-guard).
